Exercise

Exercise, both physical and mental is important for good health and is central to maintaining a healthy weight. During your stay, we hope to involve you in a variety of different exercise classes aimed at all levels of fitness and abilities. From the gentle morning walks to circuit training, we aim to get you moving and all movement is exercise. You can do as much or as little as you want, all our classes are optional. But to get full benefit from your stay, we recommend trying to do as many of the classes as possible.

Exercise has numerous benefits such as:

Not everyone likes or wants to do exercise, even though they are aware of the many benefits. We are here to help with our expertise and guidance. Some people may need to change their beliefs, thoughts, actions and emotions about exercise and fitness. Or need inspiration to make changes or motivation to get started. We offer advice and instruction on how to maintain new behaviours and develop permanent habits that in the long run benefits and enhances life. People who exercise regularly say they have more energy, have higher self esteem, are more relaxed and it makes them feel good. Exercise and fitness relates directly to health and happiness and your ability to do this thing called “life”. Does fitness matter? You bet it does! Do we need to say any more to convince you?

Mindset

Here at Bodhi Retreat we appreciate the body & mind connection to health, fitness and well being. And acknowledge that due to this important link, many people can experience difficulties when it comes to embarking on or maintaining healthy eating regimes or exercise plans. Past failures and / or experiences can lead us to reacting negatively or to dismissing new possibilities, as these subconscious messages are carried with us throughout our lives.

We can work with you to overcome these hurdles and teach you a positive approach to breaking this cycle, so you can succeed in achieving your goals and ambitions. Sometimes our minds or the way we think can be our own worst enemy.

Typical day

  • 08:00: Morning walk (along one of the many stunning valley routes)
  • 09:00: Breakfast juice
  • 10:00: Morning stretch & core (includes yoga postures and so much more)
  • 11:00: Free time
  • 13:00: Lunch time juice or salad
  • 14:00: Daily activity (either) - exercise class (get fit whilst having fun), coaching / educational talk, cooking demo / juicing lesson, beauty demonstration, facial exercises, pr just relax by the pool.
  • 15:30: Snack juice / booster shot juice / healthy snack
  • 17:00: Rebounding
  • 18:00: Evening juice or meal
  • 19:00: Evening sessions (either) - mindset for change/ mindfulness, informal group session, informative talk, guided meditation (visualization or breath work), thought provoking film / DVDs

The Jalon Valley

Also known as “Vall del Pop” is situated in the Marina Alta area on Costa Blanca north, a wonderful mix of coastline & mountains. The valley boasts some of the most magnificent scenery in Spain, it’s quite simply stunning. A landscape renowned for its olive, pine and almond trees intermingled with citrus groves and vineyards and it’s sprinkling of villages which all have a typical Spanish flavor.

Enjoying a characteristic Mediterranean climate, with summer days filled with blue skies and sun shine and during the winter months the area is protected against the cold north winds by the surrounding Sierra de Bernia and the Sierra del Forner mountains.

Village of Jalon (Xalo)

At the heart of the valley is the village of Jalon. With its blue domed church that dominates the skyline. The Tuesday market is held here in the Old Square “Plaza Mayor” around the fountain, selling local produce and specialities. Roaming around the many small streets, you will discover the charm of this typical Spanish village.

The retreat is located in picturesque surroundings on the out skirts of the village of Jalon. To the north east and just over an hour’s drive from Alicante airport and only 20 minutes away from the town of Calpe and its beautiful beaches and 25 minutes from the small costal town Moraira.

We provide delicious, satisfying food that is good for you. Our menu plan has been prepared with care and attention and is packed with whole food goodness to nourish your body. At Bodhi we have an alkaline approach that is predominantly vegetarian, with pulses, whole grains, seeds and nuts that supplement an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, giving the right balance of all three food groups - carbohydrates, proteins and fats. A diet of nutrients that is high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and naturally protective substances.

A wholesome diet, not only helps maintain overall good health, but can play a vital role in recovery from disease. On the other side, an unhealthy diet is a key contributory factor for many diseases. The food we eat impacts on the way we feel physically and emotionally. Making the right food choices, eating a variety of whole foods is investing in yourself, your well being and helps keep illness at bay.

Fish portions are available on certain days for those who require them. They are prepared and cooked in a separate kitchen to vegetarian food and juices.

Juices

Juicing supplies the body with a superb boost of nutrients. On a daily basis we serve juices that are bursting with goodness, made from various combinations of fresh fruit and vegetables, ensuring an adequate quota of vitamins and minerals.

Our bodies are able to make use of/utilize the juices quicker than solid food, which requires a much longer digestion period before any nourishment reaches the cells and tissues. Juicing can speed up the detoxification process, aid digestion, support the immune system and weight loss. Countless studies have found that a diet high in healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are associated with a reduced risk of diseases such as:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Many types of cancer
  • Type 2 diabetes

Healthy whole foods are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre. They are loaded with antioxidants, which help us by protecting our cells from damage. One problem with most processed food is that, during the manufacturing process, many healthy nutrients are removed, but most significantly fibre. Then during the enrichment process, nutrients may be artificially added back in.

The final products can encourage weight gain and chronic disease because they are generally high in added salts, sugars, fats, artificial ingredients and other chemicals and low in nutrients and fibre. They can be addictive, make you over eat and promote excessive food cravings, leading to unwanted fat gain.

Unlike whole foods, which contain a mix of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber, and water to help you feel satisfied, processed foods stimulate dopamine, a feel-good neurotransmitter, making you feel good even though the food lacks nutrients and fiber.

This artificial dopamine stimulation can lead to excessive food cravings and, ultimately, food addiction. The solution to improving your health and losing weight is often as simple as swapping processed foods for real food. People have thrived on vegetables, fruits, meats, fish, eggs and other whole foods for centuries, while processed foods were only recently invented.

Processed foods contain many substances that are contrary to health, such foods cause fast and furious increases in blood sugar and insulin that, in the short term, can cause hunger to spike and can lead to overeating—and over the long term, increase the risk of weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease.     "Retreating with Sam and Dawn at their “Oasis of Excellence” surpassed all of my expectations. Every day was special, from what I experienced, to the knowledge I gained. I can’t thank you enough for looking after us so well, it was such fun, but most importantly is, what it did for us both health wise. The painful splits I had in my tongue (before our stay), have not returned. They had been an ongoing, irritating problem for some time, but not anymore, thank you! “Eating the right type of food really can heal”. Last week I went for my 6 monthly check-up, heart, blood pressure, and cholesterol. They are all perfect and my GP was really impressed with the results (she now has your details as well). Sam, the mobility in my knee, with those stretching exercise, continues to improve. We are trying to stick to what we both learnt about a healthy lifestyle and have maintained the weight loss since arriving back home, we are both delighted about that. You’ll be pleased to hear I’m getting quite good at preparing juices now, lots of healthy yummy veg & fruit.     "I had a fabulous time at Bodhi Retreat. A week there left me feeling lighter, fitter, relaxed and more in control of my health. Both Dawn and Sam are very knowledgeable about the powerful combination of diet, nutrition, exercise and mindset. They display a friendly and professional approach to the daily sessions. I was surprised at how relaxed I felt as a result of the guided meditation. Dawn is always smiling. She keeps you well fed, by making the tastiest juices, soups, salads and healthy dinners. The vegetable bake was delicious and not something that I’d normally eat (got the recipe now!) Sam has a progressive approach with exercise, starting gently and then gradually building up the tempo and difficulty, whilst tailoring the level for each individual. Rebounding was the class I was least looking forward to, but ended up being the one I enjoyed the most. Music motivates! You are fantastic hosts and I’ve learnt so much! At the end of the week I found that I had lost 3.8 kg and 2% total body fat. I thoroughly recommend Bodhi Retreat Spain and look forward to my next visit."

    "To start off with, I’d like to say a huge thank you for the excellent week I spent with you in May 2014. As an 84 year old that has had major cancer surgery three times and 70% of my left lung removed, I was a little apprehensive about the level of fitness expected from me. But Sam and Dawn put me at ease and all classes were adapted for different levels of fitness and made fun and enjoyable. The juices were delicious and what was surprising, I didn’t feel hungry at all. All of the varied fresh meals were prepared with an understanding of what our bodies need and require, they not only looked but tasted fantastic as well. The whole experience was wonderful and even at my age, so educational. My wife was interested in losing some weight, but I lost more than her, 11lbs in one week’s stay and my blood pressure went from being quite high to normal in just 6 days. Since our return home we have taken up some of the healthy living advice and the weight has stayed off. Everyone is commenting on how well and also how young we look. Well done Bodhi retreat, you did exactly what you said you could and more. Dawn and Sam are such great hosts, so knowledgeable and caring. We would recommend the retreat to anyone. We have really felt the benefits from our stay and are going back again in the autumn."
