If you’re looking to cleanse your body of unwanted chemicals and toxins, then going on a detox diet is the way to go. Despite this being a popular trend, there are still a lot of people who don’t do this diet in a healthy way.
Even though it’s supposed to help you get rid of harmful toxins in your body, detox diets have become a controversial topic due to certain people who haven’t followed any guidelines. Before you begin with cleansing, it’s important that you understand exactly what you should and shouldn’t do. If you don’t do proper research, then you may do more harm than good to your body.
Should You Do a Detox?
Before we actually go into the do’s and don’ts of detoxing, it’s important to address all the negativity surrounding cleanses. If you follow the latest nutrition trends, then you’ve probably already heard a bunch of negative stories involving detox diets. In fact, you’re probably wondering whether it’s worth even doing it.
Well, the answer is – yes, it’s worth doing it. Due to our lifestyle choices, we have a lot of harmful toxins in our bodies. These toxins can create many serious health problems in the long run. With time, they slowly build up and start to negatively affect your health.
The truth is that food isn’t of the same quality as it once was. Because of this, we constantly encounter pesticides, toxins, and other harmful chemicals in it. Even if you exclusively buy organic food, it’s simply not as good as it was several decades ago. When you mix poor nutrition with bad sleeping habits and stress, you’re bound to experience some health problems. This is why you should consider doing a detox.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Detoxing
Do make a plan. You shouldn’t simply start with a detox diet because you read about it online. If you don’t have a proper plan, then you may experience some health problems sooner or later. It’s crucial that you speak to your doctor before you start with a cleanse. After all, you should never decide to wing it if your health is at stake.
Don’t indulge. Even though it’s obvious that you shouldn’t indulge in toxic foods while detoxing, it’s important that you don’t consume too much unhealthy food both before and after cleansing. Keep in mind that the time periods before and after your detox are just as important as the time during your cleanse. In order to get the best possible results, avoid fried and processed foods, as well as soda, alcohol, sugar, and flour at least three days before and after detoxing.
Do listen to your body. If you start experiencing any problems while you’re on a detox diet, then you should consult your doctor immediately. To help your doctor determine what’s causing you pain or discomfort, it’s best that you keep a food journal. However, there are some symptoms that you’ll most likely experience temporarily, so you shouldn’t be alarmed if you start going through mood swings or become cranky from time to time.
Don’t do strenuous workouts. Even though it’s perfectly okay to exercise during a detox, you shouldn’t really do any strenuous exercises. While cleansing your body, it’s best to stick to light exercises like yoga and walking. If you do high-intensity workouts, you may experience fatigue. Because of this, I recommend that you consider reducing the number of workouts you do per week.
Do stay hydrated. The whole process of removing toxins and other harmful chemicals out of your body requires you to stay hydrated. If you don’t consume water on a regular basis throughout the whole day, then you won’t be able to flush out toxins properly. Drinking at least half a galon of water on a daily basis is a good general rule of thumb.
Don’t stress. In order to ensure that the detox process is a success, you should reduce your stress levels. Whenever you’re stressed out, your body will start losing important nutrients like vitamin B and C. If you don’t enjoy the process, not only will the detox process won’t work, but you may even develop health problems as well.
Do improve your sleeping habits. Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for detoxifying your body. By improving your sleeping habits, you will help the process of flushing toxins out will be efficient. Instead of bringing a show on Netlifx, you should go to bed early.
Don’t follow a detox diet for too long. If you’re on a strict diet plan for too long, you may rebel and start overeating the unhealthy stuff. In case you’re not sure whether you could follow a detox diet, try doing it only for a few days or go on a detox weekend. This can help bring you one step closer to living healthier.
Do take supplements. To successfully remove toxins from your body, you will need to have a regular intake of important nutrients. If your body doesn’t get the right nutrients on a regular basis, you won’t achieve your desired results. Taking supplements will provide support for your kidneys, digestive system, and liver.
Don’t eat fewer than 1,000 calories a day. You’ll need to consume at least 1,000 calories each day to ensure your body functions properly. If you don’t do this, your body will start eating away at its own lean tissue to make up for the lack of calories. Ideally, you should eat a few hundred calories 4-6 times a day.
