You will be staying 10 days together at a lovely retreat center, set in lush exotic gardens with a big beautiful swimming pool. All around you are beauty, complete with ancient olive, orange, and fig trees laden with fruits ready to pick. Here you can relax and recharge your whole being while you slip back into the natural rhythms of nature. Situated in the gardens, there are some cottages with each their own terrace, looking out on ancient olive trees. The main house, with the kitchen and the dining room, has several single and double rooms to choose from.

This retreat will give you all that you need to get back in shape again and feel 10 years younger (at least). You will get all the tools and inspiration to implement everything into your daily life.

Each day, the yoga and meditation are dedicated to one of the seven chakras, starting with the base. Afternoons include workshops on food preparations, optional therapy sessions, walks, outings or other creative activities. Evenings can include mantra singing, discussions, inspirational films, and documentaries.

The yoga

You will be gently taken into a deepening practice of yoga postures, meditation, and pranayama. It does not matter if you are a beginner or advanced student, there is enough personal attention as SunFoodYoga keeps the groups small. Everyone can get deeper into awareness of their body, breathing, and being. Even if you have never done any yoga before, this is a great opportunity to get into a non-demanding practice at your own pace.

The morning classes will be more dynamic Yang style yoga while you end the day with a more calming Yin-Yoga practice. Tara will be guiding most of the yoga sessions and sometimes there will be guest teachers. Each day will be dedicated to one of the chakras so you can go deep into the transformational quality of each of them. You will develop the skills to work with the 7 energy gateways for greater healing, vitality, and pleasure.

Itinerary

Some days you have an evening program and there are also some excursions possible when there is enough transport for everyone. Each day, there is also a possibility to learn about raw food preparations and detox through different kind of workshops or just helping out in the kitchen.

Day 1

Arrival day. The program starts at 17:00 with a juice and a sharing circle. At 19:00 you will have dinner.

Day 2

First chakra day. The meditation and yoga are focused on grounding yourselves. You will work with the earth element through reconnecting with nature and making a beautiful walk, power walk, and walking meditation in the surrounding area.

Day 3

Second chakra day. The meditation and yoga are focused on coming into your flow. You will work with the water element. You can have a walk to the river or go to the spa in Lanjaron and have a swim in the swimming pool. You will focus on hydrating and cleansing the body through drinking a lot of healing pure spring water and green juices.

Day 4

Third chakra day. The meditation and yoga are focused on igniting your inner fire and coming to your power. You will work with the fire element. You have a fire ceremony to let go of that which no longer serves you.

Day 5

Fourth chakra day. Heart chakra day. The meditation and yoga are focused on coming into the heart space. You will work with the air element. You will do more pranayama, breathing exercises, and have a heart sharing circle.

Day 6

Fifth chakra day. The meditation and yoga are focused on more pranayama and using your voice through mantra. You will work with the element ether and when there is enough transport for everyone, you can go to the waterfalls high up in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and visit some authentic white washed villages.

Day 7

Sixth chakra day. The third eye. The meditation and yoga are focused on connecting and tuning into your inner wisdom, intuition, and inner guidance. The element here is light.

Day 8

Seventh chakra, the crown. You will focus this day more on meditation and silence. Moving beyond the body, mind, and emotions.

Day 9

This day the meditation and yoga is focused on bringing all what you have learned together into a nice flow. A journey through all the chakras. Evening celebration.

Day 10

You will have a short meditation and yoga session from 08:15 to 09:00 and then breakfast at 09:15. After that, people depart.

  • Tara Esther Kleij

    Tara was born in Holland. In 1991, she became a certified rebirther in Haarlem and in 1995, she finished an intensive four-year massage training learning classical massage, rebalancing, and Shiatsu. She learned Thai-yoga massage in Thailand and Ayurvedic yoga massage in India. She likes to share the knowledge of this ancient practice and intermix it with a mantra and pranayama. She uses alignment principles and fun to bring in her own unique teaching style. She specializes in Hatha yoga, Flow yoga, Yin yoga, meditation and pranayama, and teach for over 25 years.

This retreat will take place at La Canada, Near Orgiva, Alpujarra mountain area, Andalusia, Southern Spain. Granada is nearby with its Arabic influences, invoking images of gypsies and medieval maze-like streets with the snow top mountain peaks from the Sierra Nevada in the background.

Breakfast can be anything from almond milk with granola, banana pancakes to crackers with avocado, and cashew cheese with a smoothie prepared with superfoods.

Dinner times are always a joy for the senses. There’s always something fascinating to taste, and If you can't eat or like certain things, no worries, SunFoodYoga is happy to accommodate any of your food preferences. All food is gluten, sugar, and lactose-free at the retreats, only delicious homemade raw food, using the freshest and organically grown ingredients. Exotic fruits, like mangoes, papayas, figs, etc. can be taken throughout the day.

You will create lots of delicious meals together including soup, sushi, lasagna, and desserts and you’ll then get to eat what you’ve created (yes, detailed recipes will be provided for you to take home). All smoothies and juices are made with organic ingredients and enhanced with superfoods.

Driving directions from Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP)

  • On leaving the airport, follow signs for Malaga and then signs for Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada, Almeria, and Motril (A7).
  • After about 10 kilometers, the motorway splits into two motorways.
  • It is important that you now keep to the left on the A7 in the direction of Almeria and Motril and that you don’t follow signs for Cordoba, Sevilla, and Granada.
  • You are on the Autovia del Mediterraneo driving east along the side of the sea.
  • The name changes to Autovia de Sierra Nevada and you are now driving north and inland.
  • Continue on this motorway until junction "175" (about 20 kilometers from the coast).
  • Turn off in the direction of Orgiva and Las Alpujarras.
  • The slip road brings you down hill to the large dam and roundabout where you turn right towards Orgiva.
  • Keep going until you go through a tunnel.
  • Turn left over the River Guadalfeo towards Orgiva.
  • When you enter Orgiva, you will see a supermarket called "DIA" on your right side.
  • After that is the bus stop and then a road on the right going straight up.
  • Take that road and follow it.
  • Pass the school on your left side until you come to a junction.
  • Take the road to the right saying Tijola.
  • Drive this road for about 1 1 / 2 kilometers.
  • When you pass the dry river bed, you will see a green sign saying, Cortigo Romero.
  • Go onto this dirt track and follow until the end.
  • You will see two black gates open and a sign saying La Canada.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP). SunFoodYoga provides a low-cost group transfer on the arrival and departure dates of the retreat from Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP). For one way when 3 people share, it is 35 EUR per person. With 2 people it comes to 45 EUR each, and when alone, it is 80 EUR each. Transfers are not included in the price of your retreat and are paid in cash to the driver.

At your arrival day, the transfers are arranged between 10:00 a.m. and 03:00 p.m. When booking your flight, please choose a flight that lands not later than 03:30 p.m. to give you adequate time to get to the meeting point outside terminal 3.

Arrival by bus

There is one direct bus to Orgiva, leaving at 03:00 p.m. from Malaga bus station and arriving at Orgiva at 06:00 p.m. stopping at every little village along the way. As you come out of the terminal onto the paved area into the outside air just walk straight ahead of you underneath the overhead building.

There, directly in front of you, is the bus stop. "A" bus, ask for Estacion de Autobuses. The "A" runs about every 35 minutes. Don't be tempted to get on a free bus that uses the stop. It's the wrong one, goes to the parking lot.

Once at the bus station, you will need to buy a ticket for a coach to either Orgiva or Granada depending on which of the two onward routes that you choose. There are direct buses from Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) to Granada bus station without having to go first to Malaga bus station.

Buses from Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) to Granada depart at 08:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 04:00 p.m., 06:30 p.m., and 08:45 p.m. with a journey time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The fare is 11.43 EUR for single or 13.72 EUR depending on the bus.

  • The deposit is fully refundable if the booking is cancelled up to 42 days before the arrival date.

    "Wisdom of Horses Yoga Retreat with Tara and Kim, who are such generous and authentic people, was one of the most life-changing experiences for me. Located in a beautiful Spanish village surrounded by mountains, astonishing views and pleasant climate made the perfect place for yoga retreat. Creative, delicious daily meals full of healthy local ingredients and 'live food' was the great opportunity to heal my body. On the other hand, yoga classes were just on the right level for everyone from beginners to more advanced, and combined with meditation gave a wonderful start to a new day leaving you feeling relaxed and energized at the same time. But the real highlight of this retreat were sessions with Kim and her horses. The beautiful bond between Kim and horses was easily seen and for me she brought the human – horse relationship to a different level. I was able to learn a lot about myself through interaction with horses and see many thing from a different perspective. Being surrounded by like-minded people gave me new strength on my life journey.
