The most cost efficient, commonly used option is MEPE, which is the national bus line that runs all over Costa Rica, carrying many travelers to Puerto Viejo hotels.
There are five direct buses from San Jose to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca from the Terminal Caribe at 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 Noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The buses are fairly comfortable and cost approx. 9 USD per person.
It is recommended, if possible, to purchase your bus tickets in advance as they sometimes sell out or are standing room only (seats are reserved at time of purchase). If you want to come straight to the Caribbean from your flight, consider booking the airport pickup and bus ticket service which includes pre-purchased tickets for your desired bus departure and a taxi to meet you at the San Jose airport who will bring you to the Caribe bus station.

If you would like to rent a car www.poasrentacar.com can avail the service. This company will allow you the option to rent a car from the airport and drop it off in Puerto Verjo.
