About the Detox Technique

Shankhaprakshalana is one of the major hatha yoga practices, coming under the heading of dhauti kriya. The word shankhaprakshalana comes from two words. Shankha meaning "conch" and prakshalana meaning to wash completely. The word shankha is used to represent the entire alimentary canal from mouth to anus. This practice is also known as "varisar dhouti". This practice is also a part of kaya kalpa, which is an Ayurvedic technique for physical purification and transformation, kaya means body and kalpa means transformation. Shankhaprakshalana is the process to clean the intestinal tract by removing the impurities with salty water.

Shankhaprakshalana is not just a practice concerning the stomach and intestines, but is a thorough cleansing technique. It creates a repair action which affects the lungs, nervous system, skin, sinus area, the whole body, continuing while the person follows the regime of special food and asana. In this way we see the reduction of so many diseases and a positive positive step in the direction of good health.

Fasting is a wonderful way to get rid of deep rooted toxins from the body. As soon as we stop eating regular meals the body begins to eliminate these toxins and expels impurities out through the digestive system allowing all of the internal organs of the body to rest and recover from past exhaustions. This is one of nature’s way to heal the entire body.Three days of fasting is a perfect way to experience fasting and cleansing of the entire digestive system. From day one of the fast we will gradually reduce your intake of food each day, so that on the third day your body will be prepared with just drinking honey and lemon water as substitute as food. You will still be able to drink unlimited amounts of water with fresh lemon juice and natural herbal teas throughout the fasting. It is essential, though, that you gradually reduce your food intake within the period of three to six days. After 3 days of apple fasting. Apples have natural eliminating and laxative properties which is good for the digestive system and aids in flushing the toxins out of your body.

Fasting cleanses the mind as well as the body, therefore you will start to feel all kinds of emotions, some high’s and some lows, so try not to listen and react to these emotions and keep yourself focused, calm and balanced. Practice pranayama’s to keep you energy levels up and help manage the emotional effects.

Fasting Schedule

  • First 3 days normal food (Nepalese home made meals)
  • 4th Day : 6 Apples (2 for Breakfast, 2 for Lunch, 2 for Dinner), 3 cups of Honey & Lemon water, Unlimited amount of water & herbal teas.
  • 5th Day : 3 Apples (1 for Breakfast, 1 for Lunch, 1 for Dinner), 3 cups of Honey & Lemon water and Unlimited amount of water & herbal teas.
  • 6th Day : 3 cups of Lemon and Honey water (1 for Breakfast, 1 for Lunch, 1 for Dinner) and Unlimited amount water & herbal teas
  • 7th Day : Shankhaprakshalana

CONS Cons: Management could be improved. its working, but at times there was uncertainty about activities, who to talk to etc. You could argue that its a part of the overall experience to deal with that kind of uncertainty, but for be it was just the cause of unnecessary frustration. I support the idea of Being a volunteer in the ashram, it reflects an symbolizes some of the values in the philosophy of yoga and ashram daily life, but it is however very important that the people chosen and taken in as volunteers, live up to the values, morals etc. of the role as a volunteer. Otherwise they just become a symbol of a backpacker who found a good way not to spend money and prolong the journey. This is of course up to management to obtain and secure that the people taken in as volunteer have true and real intentions. In this specific case I would suggest that being strict and put up demands would serve the greater purpose of a good vibe i the Ashram even though the idea of karma Yoga and letting it be up to people's own conscience is important. Its more important to make sure that everyone in the ashram is committed to the philosophy and spirit of the ashram. So that no one is ruining it for others.

PROS Pros: Its was both private, personal and professional at the same time. Its not luxuries, focus is on the all around individual experience of a ashram retreat. I would go again and recommend it to anyone who would like to challenge themselfs in several ways and levels. Its an unique individual journey that will change you, surprisingly it just happens to you and the people around you without you really noticing it. I loved the peace, the food, the people, the walks, the talks and of cause the asanas......

Perfect for rest, relaxation, meditation & yoga novices

CONS Cons: The only aspect I really didnt like was the bed. I slept poorly most of the nights during my short stay. The bed/comforter-made-mattress was too hard for my liking (i sleep on my side) as was the blanket/comforter. I didnt mention this to the staff because my stay was short and i decided to live with it. Perhaps something could have been done had i said something. Wifi was unreliable during the day but hardly a put off.

PROS Pros: The food was delicious, healthy and plentiful. We had three meals plus snack time, so I was never hungry. Lots of dark green fresh veggies and fresh fruit. The staff aim to please and actively seek feedback. Three teachers rotated amongst the classes so there was variety to the teaching and practices. Two teachers used tibetan singing bowls during class, which was lovely to listen to and feel. Several facets of yoga are taught - not just asanas/postures. None of the daily events were compulsory - You could opt in/out of any part of the day. There was no pressure, guilt or judgement if you didnt, for example, do group meditation at 6am. The location is away from city life but within a short walk of a village/town centre. Showers are hot. There was an ensuite washroom with the dorm room. The other guests and the staff make this place feel like a home with a big happy family. Everyone was kind, friendly, welcoming and supportive. They sing a "happy song" for each person when they leave. It is a nice touch.

    dissapointed- very basic.

CONS Cons: The accomodation was not good enough. The water was not very warm in the only outdoor shower. Bring insect repellant!!! Our window couldn't close so there were many insects. All of the facilities were not good. The main reason why I would not recommend this place is because they are still doing renovations on the larger yoga rooms, perhaps when they are finished it will run smoother. However this ashram will never be good until they employ a good schedule. There is too much downtime. The meditation and breathing exercises were mostly self driven. The afternoon walks were very limited. Philosophy is a waste of time - I didn't learn anything that wasn't already common knowledge. I was very disappointed. Basically all you pay for is 3 great meals, very poor accommodation and two yoga classes daily. Not what I was lead to believe on the website.

PROS Pros: The food was incredible. The individuals there made it for me. I did leave early however I would not have tried to give the place a chance if it wasn't for the wonderful people I met.

"I had a really nice relaxed week here. It was so good to relax after my travels before heading home. All the people staff are friendly and welcoming. The food was simple but really tasty. I really enjoyed the Asana classes with the Vietnamese teacher (can't remember her name sorry). She was really informative and helped to ensure you were doing the positions correctly. For me the yoga philosophy classes were a bit repetitive and not as informative as intended but I think that is mainly a language barrier issue. "

"While at the Ashram I was asked to describe my experience in 7 words by another visitor. The words I used are: Welcoming, Friendly, Warm-hearted, Interesting, Cold, Challenging, Delicious. Bhaktar tries his absolute best to ensure everyone is enjoying their time in Vedic Arogya Ashram. He has a very generous spirit as does his wife, 10 month old son and younger brother. The ladies (Didis) who cook incredible food and clean are a big part of the experience and helped to make my stay a memorable one. There are of course things which don't work out as planned and as with anything in Nepal it is good to be flexible to what may come. I had two very different experiences within the Ashram, first when there were only three guests it was subdued and Bhaktar seemed distracted and impatient to get on with other tasks (this may be his way though and I've interpreted it poorly?). Having said this it was calm and gave plenty of time for reflection and settling into a new country. Then the second experience when there was a larger group of guests a total of 10, the Ashram came alive in a totally different way and Bhaktar was more engaged and less obviously in a rush to do other tasks. It probably didn't help that the day after I arrived his Yoga teacher had to leave suddenly so he had to arrange a new one whilst taking all the classes himself and managing the Ashram and other bookings for the conference hall. I would definitely go back here but maybe in the summer though as it does get very cold first thing in the morning and at night. I am very glad to have met such warm, kind people and wish them all every success in the future."

The owner and his wife were very knowledgeable but humble about their trade and made us all feel like family. The Ayurvedic detox program was both challenging and cleansing but not too extreme. It left me feeling refreshed and clean. Bhakta, his wonderful wife Ramita, brother Sroj, and the rest of the family together with the inspiring yoga teacher Olga, made the nine days I spent here an unforgettable memory. I was pleased with the yoga, asanas, and pranayama classes, which for a beginner were on a good level. "I really had a special experience at the peaceful and beautiful Vedic Arogya Ashram. The people treat you like your own family, I always felt welcome and at home. I think the program is really unique and effective, I have seen peoples' lives change from staying there. The ashram is both spiritual and health focused, offering medicine, treatments, massage, Reiki and yoga and meditation. By staying for a while, they can help you make the changes in your life, which you really want, for the mind, body and spirit. I stayed in the very beginning, now these days there are more facilities and very interesting programs running. It is well away from the busy Thamel tourist scene, in the fresh mountain air and water. I recommend all people to come and stay or visit. Thank you everyone at the Ashram for your kindness and help, I love you all!"
